Managing Instruments

Overview

Instruments are managed under Organization > Instruments. The list includes field instruments and online analyzers. You can view and edit one instrument at a time, change attributes for a specific period, review the change log, and create or update instruments in bulk.

The screens and rules match those of Streams (see Managing Streams).

View and filter the instrument list

  1. Go to Organization > Instruments.
  2. Scroll sideways to see custom attributes.
  3. Open Filters. After the core fields, filters are listed alphabetically by custom attribute ID.
  4. To filter by site, collapse the instrument filters, then open the Sites filters.
  5. Use the column controls to choose which columns are visible and in what order. The default order is alphabetical.

Edit an instrument

  1. Click an instrument in the list to open its page.
  2. Click Edit to change validation and calibration settings or other custom attributes.
  3. Use the status control to set the instrument Active or Inactive.
  4. Save.

Period-based attributes (state management)

When you update custom attributes, you can set a start period and/or end period. The previous value remains in effect for earlier periods.

Example: if you update Calibration Frequency effective August 2026, the previous value still applies to all periods before August 2026.

Use the period control on the instrument page or on the instrument list to view or export attributes for that period.

Change log

Open the Change Log tab on the instrument to see historical changes to its metadata.

Bulk import and export

Instruments support the same bulk import and export as streams, including the import template and period columns. See Bulk export and Bulk import in Managing Streams.
