Stream Alerts: Configuring Inline Settings

Configuring Inline Settings

Introduction

The purpose of the stream alerts feature is to set field lab alert limits on the streams and sample locations in Validere 360. In this article,  inline measurement alerts for readings that come from either virtual analyzers or inline analyzers will be discussed.

Configuring Inline Alerts

To configure alerts, find the stream that you are interested in. Next click on the dash (if no existing limit exists) or the number corresponding to the property that you would like to configure. A pop-up window will appear with two tabs. Click on the 'Inline Measurement' tab to set the desired limits.

Examples and Considerations for Inline Alerts

Inline alerts will be triggered based off the number of measurements that have been recorded off-spec within the specified time frame. Based off the settings in the animation above, an alert will be sent whenever at least one sulphur measurement is above 0.5% in the last 1 minute. The reference point of the 1 minute look-back interval is the time stamp of the latest measurement.

Given the above, it is important to consider the frequency of measurement when setting inline alerts. Consider the following examples as a guide:

Example 1: Conservative Alert Settings

  • Inline analyzer frequency: 1 measurement per minute
  • Inline alert setting: 1 measurement out of range in the last 1 minute

This example is based off the settings in the animation. A very conservative alert setting has been configured in which every measurement that is out of range will trigger an alert. In a plant upset where the measurements are out of range for an hour, the alert setting would cause 60 alerts to be triggered. While this is certainly a conservative approach, it can become a nuisance under certain circumstances.

Example 2: Equivalent Frequency Trap

  • Inline analyzer frequency: 1 measurement per minute
  • Inline alert setting: 60 measurements out of range in the last 60 minutes

Although the frequencies of the inline analyzer measurements and the alert settings are equivalent, an alert will not be sent unless 100% of the measurements in the last hour (all 60 of them) have been out of range.

Example 3: Is it a Trend?

  • Inline analyzer frequency: 1 measurement per minute
  • Inline alert setting: 2 measurements out of range in the last 2 minutes

In this example, alerts will be triggered only if there are two consecutive off-spec measurements.

Example 4: Percent Off-Spec

  • Inline analyzer frequency: 1 measurement per minute
  • Inline alert setting: 6 measurements out of range in the last 60 minutes

In this example, the alert has been configured to track whether 90% of the measurements (54 readings) in the last hour are within acceptable limits. Anything less than 90% will trigger an alert.
